Beginner Guide

How to Fish drops you on a small island after a boating accident. The first hour is about understanding the loop: catch fish, sell fish, buy better gear, then repeat. Combat and bosses come later, but the same loop drives every upgrade you will make.

First Hour on the Island

Start with the basic rod and whatever bait the starting area gives you. Sell your first catches to the shop NPC to cover early expenses. The first money you make is more useful as gear than as savings — the early upgrades pay for themselves within one or two fishing runs. Talk to NPCs, accept the first quests, and use them to learn where the higher-value fish spawn.

The Core Loop

Fishing is the engine of the entire game. You catch fish, you can sell them directly, and you spend that money on better gear and weapons. Better gear lets you catch better fish, and weapons let you deal with threats that interfere with fishing. The whole game is built on this loop. If you are stuck, ask yourself which part of the loop is breaking — usually it is the gear side.

Upgrades and Weapons

Prioritize gear upgrades over weapons in the first few hours, unless a quest or boss requires combat. Weapons matter more once you start unlocking new islands. The shop NPC sells both, and better versions unlock as you progress. The goal is to be ready for the first boss fight, not to be over-equipped.

Quick Tips

  • Sell early fish instead of hoarding them — money compounds faster through gear.
  • Read each quest objective before you start fishing for it.
  • Trick shots and rare variants are worth more money — practice them when you can.
  • Save before boss attempts; the wiki lists each boss's preparation needs.
